I was surfing some of the blogs I read regularly today, and I came across an article that talked about a Catholic High School that canceled its prom.  It got tired of it getting more and more excessive with all the after prom parties, limousines, alcohol, and other excesses that seem to go along with prom.  You can click here to read their letter that details why they canceled their prom.

On a similar note, two years ago I heard a story about another Christian High School that didn't cancel their prom, but instead of renting an expensive hall and buying brand new dresses and tuxes, the students decided to have their prom in the gymnasium, get their dresses from Goodwill and instead of shelling out $1000 for the night, they raised over $45,000 and built a elementary school in impoverished Zambia.  Talk about a different way of doing things AND still having a great prom with amazing memories.

What if?  we didn't buy in to all the hype that goes along with prom?  What if we got second hand dresses at Goodwill and ate out fast food for prom?  What if we drove mom and dad's car instead of renting a limo for the evening?  What if high school seniors all over the country started to build schools in Zambia, hospitals in Ethiopia, help fund AIDS research, and have a great low cost prom?  What if school after school began to make these kinds of things normal for prom?  How cool would that be?
