O YOU COWS OF BASHAN!
by
Matthew
on Mon 25 Sep 2006 03:00 AM PDT
This week we started our series on the OT Prophets. This
week's theme was "Justice." One of the main passages came from
Amos 4 where the prophet Amos calls the nation of Israel uncaring and apathetic
towards the poor and needy in the countries around them. He calls them, “Cows of Bashan.” In other words he is painting a picture of
these lazy, rich, people who don’t care about the needs of others.
“Hear
this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria,
you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy
and say to your husbands, "Bring us some
drinks!" The Sovereign
LORD has sworn by his holiness:
"The time will surely come
when you will be taken away with hooks,
the last of you with fishhooks.
The problem is what will happen to these people. Amos says, “The time will come when you will be taken away with hooks.” I think Amos is painting a picture of Judgment
Day here for the nation. God is saying
that those who have the means to help and don’t will be held accountable for
their inaction.
The upside of passages like this is that GOD does CARE. God Cares about the poor, the oppressed, those taken advantage of. God desires Justice and Mercy. Can you imagine what life and faith would be like if God DIDN'T care about these issues and people? That would be a cold and heartless god. That would be a god not worth worshipping and following.
Here are some things to think about this week:
- What are some issues about poverty
that you have not really cared about? (Immigration, homelessness,
preventable diseases, Made in the Streets?)
- What are the things that GOD cares about in our world that may not be getting the attention it deserves?
- What are the INJUSTICES you see in the
world? What wrongs ought to be
righted?
- Amos calls the nation of Israel to
change, in what ways ought we as the church change to care about the needs
around us?
- What needs might we address just in
our community? (poverty, homelessness, immigration?)
- What can YOU do to help?

FAMILY WORSHIP EXPERIENCE TONIGHT!!
by
Matthew
on Sat 23 Sep 2006 10:03 AM PDT
TONIGHT September 23rd · 5:45-7:30pmOak RoomFamilies of students grades 2-12One of the things that Student and Children Ministries strives to be is a PARTNER for parents as they raise their children. We want to be a supplement to the spiritual guidance that is going on at home NOT a substitute. We want to be always resourcing parents with tools and opportunities to connect with their student about spiritual matters. We know that it is the parents that have the biggest impact on their students spiritually, that is why we want to give as many opportunities for that kind of dialogue and experience to happen. This Saturday at 5:45 in the Oak Room we are hosting, “Family Worship Experience” for families of students grades 2-12. This is an interactive time of worship where you can really connect and share in worship together.

.::Help Update the FRAMES Art Gallery
by
Matthew
on Fri 22 Sep 2006 04:00 AM PDT
Hey! I know that God has filled this ministry with a bunch of CREATIVE peole. Those who like to draw, paint, write, sculpt and craft all sorts of wonderful creations. We want to display YOUR artwork in the stairwell leading up to the Birch Room! If you have a poem, photo, painting, drawing, ceramic project, sculpture, or other piece of art that we can hang on the wall or put on a shelf, we want to display it in the Frames Art Gallery!!! For those of you who took Art, Ceramics, Photo, Underwater
Basketweaving, Etc. last year, I know your projects are probably just laying around. So bring in your drawings, canvases, sculpture, etc. and give it to Walter so we can display it in Frames. Make sure you put your name and the name of the piece so that we can label it correctly.

Make it YOUR Jukebox!
by
Matthew
on Fri 22 Sep 2006 02:00 AM PDT
.::Make your own mix CD for the Jukebox I know that this week's Winter Break will find you sitting around doin' nothin' at least for SOME of
the week. So make yourself useful and express yourself through your
music library. Make your own CD for the Student Ministry Jukebox. So
when you come to Bible Class, Sanctuary, or any other Youth Group
event, you can play some of your favorite tunes! Here is also a way
for you to leave a little bit of you behind. We have space for 100
CDs. So here is what you can do: 1. Make your own mix CD:
Remember this is a church jukebox so only put songs with decent lyrics
on it (I think that falls under the DUH category) Also, Make sure each
track you burn is a track you own. Don't burn music that you may have downloaded from one of those sketchy sites on the internet. 2. Pick a number from
00-99 where you want your CD to go in the jukebox. That way when you
come into the Birch room you know exactly where YOUR CD is. 3. Name Your Mix: You can name your mix whatever you want. Be creative and make it something that reflect WHO you are. 4. Bring it to Youth Group: We can't put your CD in if we don't have it. Make sure you have a list of tracks on your CD so that we can make a card for the jukebox. So go and do it now.

So make plans to be there because you will not want to miss out
